with students of Christopher 'Hareesh' Wallis, as part of “The Heart of
Recognition” course series, about the foundations of Buddhist Tantra and
the role of Tantra in Buddhism today. She brings clarity to the
transition of Tantra from it’s origins into Tibetan culture, bridging
the link between Shamanism and Buddhism. This fusion allowed for female
figures, such as Machig Labdron, to create seminal works in the Tibetan
Buddhist canon and develop important healing practices such as Chod.
These teachings are accessible to everyone and particularly illuminate
importance of Feminine Wisdom in Buddhism and Tantra.
all to understand the common elements of influence in our culture,
especially when such philosophies are being widely entertained to
increase personal well-being and strengthen the greater good. However
the personal integration and practice of such ideals can be as
complicated as the truths are simple and touching such subtlety is
better navigated with a map (or at least an existential tourists guide). I hope you

sacred wisdom in all forms. I will be delving deeper in related topics moving forward.
I've been holding this one back for awhile but its finally public and share-able
Gotta say its a favorite... the drums are awesome (straight from OZ)... K Flay kills it!! http://www.kflay.com
And... I like to listen to it over and over and over again and sing along.
Elements of electro, surf, rock, dub & hip hop have formed like Voltron to make a sound that makes your chest pound while K Flay eases you into a catchy hook with facetious lyrics sprinkling humor into impending doom.
This is the second collab between K Flay and Roy 2k and it better not be the last!

Plus ya gotta love that that the whole thing was inspired by a painting... although the bunny version you see above is for the video in production (which is extra awesome!!). I love me some sweet animation!

Check Roy's youtube channel for past videos and live sets with the likes of K Flay, Dj Collage, Dj Quest, Kat Ouano (of Crown City Rockers) and well... himself on lots of instruments. Quest may not like to think of himself as a teacher, but I learn something everytime I do a show or session with him...
So when you listen to this mix... prepare to for some serious school!

DJ Quest Schizo-Hernia Mixtape

01 intro
02 i aint trippin no mo
03 cant live without my remix
04 girlz drop it
05 keep on joking
06 tipsy enough
07 dating remix
08 drop it like its monalisa
09 code rampage
10 tried by sadness
11 body moving remix
12 i want your interlude
13 call me dwyck nice
14 rock box-simon
15 why cant we mix together
16 lets shout some fun
17 give it auto-drive away
18 follow the dealer

contact:djquest@djquest.com
www.djquest.com
www.myspace.com/djquestosahn

<itunes:author>Cikee</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Radio Perfilo - DJ Quest "Schizo-Hernia" Mixtape</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>DJ Quest Schizo-Hernia Mixtape

I post the second half of the set that Ghislain Poirier
did on the radio show back in April. I was giving it another listen
yesterday and rekindled the moment of jaw dropping awe at Poirier's
production skills that I had when he was on the show. The space he
leaves in his beats is filled with
electro energy of the best kind. So while Ghislain is taking his
sounds to the clubs of Brazil and then across the pond to Bristol, you
can Bounce Le Gros around your living room until he comes back round to
this continent.
Here are some links to downloads and vids he sent out en avant of Karnival V.1 to add to the mix as well... enjoy...

Dj Aspect McCarthy (dj for Jazz Mafia as well as several
other composition and performance projects) with Powder P live in
studio
with lots of turntables dropping the phattest of beats (most produced
by
McCarthy as original joints and remixes). This goes out to the heads
who sip on a lil Stonesthrow for breakfast, snack on some Solesides,
and get down with Wild Pitch for dinner for dirty smooth n funky hip
hop that'll make you slur your speach.

(Oh... and check out SLUMP CO. & ASSOCIATES: Aspect McCarthy of Jazz Mafia
& E Live of 80's Babies too... this project is one of my favorites
to play and play with!! )

So the Roy Two Thousand did a remix of one of his favorite techno tracks of all time, Orbital's 'Halcyon + On + On'... and it happens that this track holds a special place in my heart thus I'm pretty stoked about this one as well... the fact that he made most of the beat while on a boat sailing the Cali coast for a month is extra nice! I wanted to send it out and share it with all of y'all so you can take with you into the world... this song is meant to be part of a personal soundtrack for sure!

And if you don't know Roy and haven't checked out the live set then head out to Dub Mission at the Elbo Room in SF on May 17th. He'll be settin up his soundsystem with some support from DJ Quest. (By the way... the Roy Two Thousand Soundsystem is a guitar, a bass, a bong, two turntables, a melodica, racks of processors and a new cow bell!! ) This is a show not to be missed ... an extra special "treat" for everyone there.

roy say's 'the future rocks!!' and so it does!
roll on over to his site and check out videos and more free songs... this guy gives and he gives and smiles a lot too!!
so enjoy and pick a up a smile while you're there... (and yesssss... I am totally feelin' the feel good vibe ... sunshine can do that to a girl

this set, he was so happy with it...)
And a DJ Quest, Oatylove, Dawgisht, Roy Two Thousand (guitar), and
Radio Active (emcee and beatbox) 1st time playing together jam session
and this is the set that i'm allowed to send out to y'all... I love it
when my evil plans come together and I get 5 people in the studio that
throw down something I've never seen or heard before and when those 5
people are sick at what they do, you get a session like this...
We're doing another marathon session live from 1pm to 9pm on KZSU
Sunday June 29th so be sure and check it out... it'll be streaming
live at kzsulive.stanford.edu . DJ Mars, the emcee Apostle and other
special guests will also be in the mix in addition to the Quest Quartz
Qrew and Roy Two Thousand.

This set is all just to give you a taster of Roy Two Thousand's

This is a live recording of the last show Roy McNeill did as Organik and is an example of a sound in transition. He now is embracing a more processed beat driven experiment of "music from the future". I included his first single under Roy Two Thousand, "Can't Stop", at the beginning of the live recording so y'all can get a taste of what is to come... (there is an alternate version at the end of the live set if you'd like to compare and he has a nifty video of the original up on his youtube as well.) I've got to say that with all the elements he has to his live sets, the intrigue I felt as a dj/musician/engineer has increased the more I see the evolution of these sounds into something representing a moment in our culture where soundclashing is being taken to a whole nother level. This is one of the many examples of hybridized music and musicianship I'm loving to watch and listen to... especially since it changes shape and direction almost daily.

This kid's got a lot of live shows coming up with some of my favorite bay area peoples so try to check this in person if you can...
last sunday DJ Quest, Roy Two Thousand, Radio Active, Dawgisht and DJ Oatylove all threw down on a formidable jam live on air and I'll be putting that up soon as well... stay posted...

thanks to Giada and Dixie for the excellent intro! Cool Italian girls make everything better!

check www.myspace.com/roytwothousand for downloads and such...
and here's where you can check the Organik / Roy Two Thousand videos

Articles on violence and silenced voices of dissent going back years

In June of 2006, I spoke with John Ackerly of the International
Campaign for Tibet. At the time, the media was not as focused on the
violence in Lhasa as it is now. It seemed that nonviolent
diplomacy was a likely option as voices in the Chinese government were
starting to warm towards the plight of Tibetans and openly criticize
China's policies regarding continued occupation of the nation. Even
though this interview is almost two years old, I wanted to share it in
view of recent developments and hopefully provide a little more
background, even if it is basic information.

Americans carry a rather simplified idea of Tibet as a peaceful nation
being
occupied and as a culture being slowly dissolved into the Peoples
Republic of China.
We think that it's a shame, and we feel bad so we put bumper stickers
on our cars, throw concerts to build awareness, and then go back to
our day to day lives.
Most of us (including myself) do not know the details of
the U.S. diplomatic policy regarding China and Tibet, and most of us do
not know much about the people and customs of Tibet (beyond cliched
rural images with the Himalayas in the background and pictures of the
Dalai Lama smiling and looking peaceful). This is what I choose to
think of myself. It is a wonderful view of an idealized culture
led by a leader who embodies all that I like to believe is right in
the world. But I am as guilty of pushing the Tibetan reality under
the rug, along with the rest of the atrocities occurring world wide that
prick my conscience, as anyone else.

I have no obligation to be objective here, so I can openly admit that
what I have read, in the sources linked above, and watched in short news
clips brings tears to my eyes. I want to do something. I want to
find who is responsible and tell them that they have to stop. I want
to tell them that there are other ways to maintain a strong economy
and feed their citizens. But in truth, it does no good to blame only
the Chinese government and to shoot criticisms at a regime, in
transition, upholding policies and actions instigated decades
ago. Feeling anger and the need to reach out and help ease the
frustrations
of a people oppressed are natural reactions, but it we should instead
turn that energy into educating the world population on the
consequences of violence in aggressive as well as defensive tactics.
Great and
positive changes in social and political tyranny have been achieved by
nonviolent acts in our very recent history, and stopping violence in
response to violence, ceasing threats in response to threats, and
promoting
demilitarizing political agendas is the most obvious step towards
ending a cycle of wars and the tyranny at play when peaceful nations
held in check by military
occupation.

When the population of one of the most nonviolent governments and
cultures in the world has finally erupted into riots where Monks are
being fired upon and crowds are being herded with tanks and tear gas,
should we not ask ourselves if there is a better option? Should we
not consider this a moment of revelation? More thought and more
energy need to be directed towards the contemplation of peaceful
politics. Nonviolent diplomacy should be taking the place of bullying
government policies. The US is particularly guilty of patrolling the
world
with big sticks and sending invasion forces into unstable situations.
Under the guise of saving the weak and protecting nations from
themselves, and under the pretense of promoting political and
economic stability, we tend to do the opposite (see the Philippines,
Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq). Is this not another form of
colonization via a trojan horse painted in the colors of democracy,
freedom, and human rights? Are we, as individuals, not
responsible when we do not speak up in protest? Hasn't our culture's
passive response been interpreted as an endorsement of US diplomatic
policy? I think yes!

I would like to ask you all to make this a personal process. Educate
yourselves and try to look beyond the 2 minute bites on CNN and the
BBC. Spend ten minutes talking to someone about issues that cause
your sides to clench and tears to prick your eyes. Challenge yourself
to envision a resolution and an end to violence. Follow it by thoughts
of ways that this could possibly happen. I ask you to see a world
where we are a world community embodying patience, intelligence and
compassion enough to manifest a world where violence (even in protest
to violence) is not the first option. We are better than that. We
are a people that can build amazing jewels of civilization and
contemplate our own existence to degrees that dizzy the imagination.
We can build models of the shape of the universe and theorize on the
nature off
all its parts. Can we not find a way to evolve again and begin a
cycle of giving rather than taking, of balance instead of power, of
peace instead of war? Please believe in the power of communication and
one of the first steps towards peace is asking for it.

On the ICT website, there are ways to get involved, links for letter
writing campaigns, and information on the San Francisco Beijing '08
Campaign occurring from April 7th, 2008 to April 9th, 2008 in San
Francisco in Berkeley. This is an immediate chance to educate
yourself as ICT will be publicly examining China's Human Rights record
over the last year in preparation for the arrival of the Olympic Torch
in San Francisco on April 9th. The goal of this campaign is to draw
attention to ideals that the Olympic Games are founded upon and
hopefully encourage the Chinese government to act according to those
goals in future talks regarding the future of Tibet.

This is a very personal message.
Thank you for reading!
I have to say that I've been a huge fan of Turntables On The Hudson for about 7 years and to get to record this live set of Zeb and Nickodemus at Dub Mission and then share it with all of y'all is a very special thing for me. Even though the sound is rough, you get a real sense of where Zeb's amazing production skill comes from when you hear him in the role of instrumentalist accompaniment to the dj'd selections Nickodemus brings. The two are masters of sound collage and merging sonic textures and rhythms into moments in the mix I thought I could never dance to but have been proven oh so very wrong!! Special guests Jef Stott (2nd Oud) & Drum Spider on Darbouka were also performing that night.
This is part one of the live set. There is a second shorter set and the interview of me and Nickodemus on live on the radio the week before coming up in the future feed as well...

For local Bay Area readers...

This mix speaks for itself... you can see why Balagan's "Funny Accent" mix made my top of 2007 list. He's one of the few dj's that truly gives me new sounds that I've never heard before from places that I wish I could be digging.
He's got new gadgets now so I'm hoping this will become a regular thing. He's also makin his way to the westcoast sometime this spring so keep an eye on my dj schedule cause I'll be posting his SF dates there for sure...
Oh... and check is myspace and the Low Bee forum to catch up with him in on home turf at the Baltimore and DC parties.

Mochi has his own title for this mix, but I like to call it "Otters and Manatees Holdin Hands"
If we didn't miss havin Mochipet in the SF so much I would tell him to go on tour forever cause he's been super prolific. Seems I've been getting more mashups and mixes in the mail than ever... he's got one more month on the road so check the schedule and holla at a TourPet...

Every time I have Dub U on the show he continues to surprise and delight with the way he styles his textures and selects his sounds... while I think of him as a dubstep dj, he never boxes himself in and keeps things interesting with dynamic rhythms and surprising choices. I was supposed to hop on the tables after him but he was willing to go for almost a two hour set so I put 'em to work... word is he sometimes goes six hours straight on his Sunday stream on Subfm.com. Part two is on the way along with a playlist to be added later... in the meantime feel free to hit up Dub U on myspace in case we lag on that list (given the number of calls I got during the live set, the rundown is long overdue).

So its been long enough that I know I was fiendin for another Mochisession on my airwaves. This is the BirthdayPet show with Mike Boo on the turntable (the vestax midi turntable that he helped design by the way - first time in studio with it...) and Art Linkletterz on the mic. I kept part of our delightful post set mic break cause it was too ridiculous to cut off... although i didn't leave everything up there. But that way you can just listen to the end and find out about all the new albums coming out because I'm a little lazy with the writing and Mochipet is way too productive to keep up with...
He's been sending me these tour mashes of his vocals from the new Microphone Pet album due out later this spring that are making happy hour zombies dance like it's last call... I already know this is going to be one of my top albums of '08 and I haven't even heard Feel My China or Microphones & Muffins yet....
if you missed the live stream then you missed me playing the whole album before these guys got busy on the live set.
This is the second time I've had The Genie in for a live session and it was way too long in between his visits. You really have to see what he does to fully appreciate the organic structure of each song and the elements he draws on with his performance... but pretty much the style is "scratch guitar" and his tools are his guitar, his mic for beat boxing and his pedals for looping and efx. I love it because it is a mode of turntablism taken over by a more traditionally concept of instrumentalism. The Genie uses beats and songs that we recognize to provide a reference point for the distance that he takes a slide guitar sound through efx and carefully constructed audio friction reminiscent of a dj scratching. Check videos on his myspace for a more in depth break down of the whole thing. He's working with some great producers right now so keep you ear to the ground on new albums soon to come... cause it's been too long...

<itunes:author>Cikee</itunes:author><itunes:subtitle>Radio Perfilo - A Genie with a Scratch Guitar (session 2)</itunes:subtitle><itunes:summary>This is the second time I've had The Genie in for a live session and it was way too long in between his visits. The Genie uses beats and songs that we recognize to provide a reference point for the distance that he takes a slide guitar sound through efx and carefully constructed audio friction reminiscent of a dj scratching. Check videos on his myspace for a more in depth break down of the whole thing. He's working with some great producers right now so keep you ear to the ground on new albums soon to come... cause it's been too long...http://www.myspace.com/thegenie</itunes:summary><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:block>no</itunes:block><itunes:duration>00:42:07</itunes:duration><itunes:keywords>hip hop dub scratch guitar</itunes:keywords>

Radio Perfilo - Rakim Allah - an interview

Back in early November, I got a chance to interview Rakim while he was on tour with Brotha Ali and Ghostface Killah. They were all being backed by Rhythm Roots Allstars - an incredible live band on its own by the way so please check them out!! - and not only was getting to see Rakim live an incredible moment, but hearing a live band play some of my most loved breaks and beats was almost too much. Anyways... Rakim has a new label and sounds on the way and is still touring and doin what he can to keep hip hop a movement that we can still take pride in as listeners who choose to be inspired by our music. This was done at 2:30 am and we were all a bit done in but I appreciated the thought and consideration given to answering every question. I was surprised by some responses and I left with a better understanding of one of my favorite emcees of all time. So if this means something to you then I think you can guess what it meant to me. I'd like to thank Davey D of Hardknock Radio for contributing his questions to this segment as well. (This originally aired on November 3rd and may sound a little different cause I mixed it live in serato... somethin for you production geeks like me out there).
Paul Salva and Approach came in for a nice lil live emcee session to show off some of the tracks that they've been mixing up in the lab. These artists are part of the next step up a level with a swerve and sidestep as hip hop and other veins of electronic music merge and mutate. They keep it connected with with their roots in those classic Detroit sounds from funk to techno to everything Dillatastic mixed in with some Miami Bass and Chicago flavor while still bringing a new kind of musicianship to beat making and its wonderful machines.
I just gotta say that everything Paul Salva makes is an instant favorite and in this show you can hear me stop mid-sentence more than a few times as his sounds make my head stand still. Not only is he a skilled sound assembler but the man can rap and scratch and mix his ass off too... plus... he's now brought Approach out the the bay from Kansas to show the Bay Area emcees that they better step up the game cause these flows are tight. Approach also has projects comin out with Madlib fam Oh No and is constantly at work buildin that trueskool foundation up every which way he can. (Just check the two disks he's slingin at folks now... your ears won't let you let go of those sounds). The only thing missin on this show is emcee Epcot who's been lendin more than a lil helpin hand to the Glitch Mob as they slay crowds in the Bay and beyond.

The Perennial Philosophy changed up the tempo a bit when we had Hanni El Khatib (also a member of Her Space Holiday) doing a live acoustic set in studio and playing us some tracks off of his solo EP. Nick Andre (of Slept on Records and City Light) jumped in on xylophone for an impromtu version of Kelis' Millionaire that I had on repeat for days (and was making everyone I could listen... it's still up on The Perennial Philosophy myspace player as well). And may I say anyone that brings a xylophone in for a live set is automatically my hero! I was thinkin it's high time for a lil more dubstep. I've been sittin on this set for a couple months 'cause Selector Dub U dropped some tracks from peoples he and I both like to support, and we wanted to be able to list all the wonderful talent going into this mix. Alas... the playlist is still coming but I thought I would go on and post this baby as the beginning of an onslaught of shows coming your way. I am up to my eyeballs in wonderful sets and enlightening interviews that I hope to work through over the next month so we can start the new year fresh!! fresh!! fresh!!
But enough about that... just to recap... Selector Dub U is a Bay Area pillar of dubstep and keeps me supplied with wonderful sets as often as schedules allow... Right now he also has a remix out on the Baron Zen album released a few months back on Stones Throw and will be sending projects out into the world in the near future so keep your eyes and ears open.
I also got to hear Emcee Child, who jumps on the mic with Selector Dub U from time to time, and was a little impressed. (And as this hip hop girl grows older and more jaded, mic handlers tend to do that less and less, I must confess). So check this dynamic duo live whenever possible and big up to the DJs making Dubstep live out loud in the Bay Area!
