This is a live recording of the last show Roy McNeill did as Organik and is an example of a sound in transition. He now is embracing a more processed beat driven experiment of "music from the future". I included his first single under Roy Two Thousand, "Can't Stop", at the beginning of the live recording so y'all can get a taste of what is to come... (there is an alternate version at the end of the live set if you'd like to compare and he has a nifty video of the original up on his youtube as well.) I've got to say that with all the elements he has to his live sets, the intrigue I felt as a dj/musician/engineer has increased the more I see the evolution of these sounds into something representing a moment in our culture where soundclashing is being taken to a whole nother level. This is one of the many examples of hybridized music and musicianship I'm loving to watch and listen to... especially since it changes shape and direction almost daily.

This kid's got a lot of live shows coming up with some of my favorite bay area peoples so try to check this in person if you can...
last sunday DJ Quest, Roy Two Thousand, Radio Active, Dawgisht and DJ Oatylove all threw down on a formidable jam live on air and I'll be putting that up soon as well... stay posted...

thanks to Giada and Dixie for the excellent intro! Eight Tibetans killed in Kardze: new phase in protests in Tibet
http://www.savetibet.org/news/newsitem.php?id=1279
Articles on violence and silenced voices of dissent going back years
http://www.savetibet.org/news/insidetibet.php

In June of 2006, I spoke with John Ackerly of the International
Campaign for Tibet. At the time, the media was not as focused on the
violence in Lhasa as it is now, and it seemed that nonviolent
diplomacy was a likely option as voices in the Chinese government were
starting to warm towards the plight of Tibetans and openly criticize
China's policies regarding continued occupation of the nation. Even
though this interview is almost two years old, I wanted to share it in
view of recent developments and hopefully provide a little more
background, even if basic information. Americans carry a rather
simplified idea that this a peaceful nation being occupied and a
culture is being slowly dissolved into the Peoples Republic of China,
and it's a shame and we feel bad so we put bumper stickers on our
cars, throw concerts to build awareness and then go back to our day to
day lives. Most of us (including myself) do not know the details of
the U.S. diplomatic policy regarding China and Tibet and most of us do
not know much about the people and customs of Tibet beyond cliched
rural images with the Himalayas in the background and pictures of the
Dalai Lama smiling and looking peaceful. This is what I choose to
think of myself because it is a wonderful view of an idealized culture
led by a leader who embodies all that I like to believe is right in
the world. But I am as guilty of pushing the Tibetan reality under
the rug with the rest of the atrocities occurring world wide that
prick my conscience as anyone else.

I have no obligation to be objective here, so I can openly admit that
what I have read in sources linked above and watched in short news
clips brings tears to my eyes. I want to do something. I want to
find who is responsible and tell them that they have to stop. I want
to tell them that there are other ways to maintain a strong economy
and feed their citizens. But in truth, it does no good to blame only
the Chinese government and to shoot criticisms at a regime in
transition currently upholding policies and actions instigated decades
ago. Anger and the need to reach out and help ease the frustrations
of a people oppressed are natural reactions, but it we should instead
turn that energy into educating the world population on the
consequences of violence in aggression as well as defense. Great and
positive changes in social and political tyranny have been achieved by
nonviolent acts in our very recent history and stopping violence in
response to violence, ceasing threats in response to threats, and
demilitarizing political agendas is the most obvious step towards
ending a cycle of world war and nations held in check by military
occupation.

When the population of one of the most nonviolent governments and
cultures in the world has finally erupted into riots where Monks are
being fired upon and crowds are being herded with tanks and tear gas,
should we not ask ourselves if there is a better option? Should we
not consider this a moment of revelation? More thought and more
energy need to be directed towards the contemplation of peaceful
politics. Nonviolent diplomacy should be taking the place of bully
governments. The US is particularly guilty of patrolling the world
with big sticks and invasion forces riding into save the week on the
pretense of saving them from themselves and promoting political and
economic stability. Is this not another form of colonization via a
trojan horse of democracy, freedom, and human rights? Are we as individuals not
responsible as long as we stay silent?

I would like to ask you all to make this a personal process. Educate
yourselves and try to look beyond the 2 minute bites on CNN and the
BBC. Spend ten minutes talking to someone about issues that cause
your sides to clench and tears to prick your eyes. Challenge yourself
to envision a resolution and an end to violence followed by thoughts
of ways that this could possibly happen. I ask you to see a world
where we as a world community have patience, the intelligence and
compassion enough to manifest a world where violence (even in protest
to violence) is not the first option. We are better than that. We
are a people that can build amazing jewels of civilization and
contemplate our own existence to degrees that dizzy the imagination.
We can build models of the shape of the universe and the nature off
all its parts. Can we not find a way to evolve again and begin a
cycle of giving rather than taking, of balance instead of power, of
peace instead of war? Please believe in the power of communication and
one of the first steps towards peace is asking for it.

On the ICT website, there are ways to get involved, links for letter
writing campaigns, and information on the San Francisco Beijing '08
Campaign occurring from April 7th, 2008 to April 9th, 2008 in San
Francisco in Berkeley. This is an immediate chance to educate
yourself as ICT will be publicly examining China's Human Rights record
over the last year in preparation for the arrival of the Olympic Torch
in San Francisco on April 9th. The goal of this campaign is to draw
attention to ideals that the Olympic Games are founded upon and
hopefully encourage the Chinese government to act according to those
goals in future talks regarding the future of Tibet.

This is a very personal message.

One of the things that I really appreciate about Ghislain Poirier is that he loves to share his music. Granted... he has to put food on the table like everyone else but it's a nice reminder that artists love to give pieces and parts of themselves through their music and recorded expression. Keepin that in mind, it's important for us uber consumer's, downloaders, and compulsive file sharers to realize that every once in awhile it's nice to stop into your local record store and pick up some wax or even a cd (but only when vinyl is not available). I want my favorite artists to have as much free time as possible to make more music so I get super inbox happiness when I get something like this Cham/Sixtoo track in the mail. I might post another gem later on in April but in the meantime try to get your hands on the full release... specially you dj's cause every track I've heard so far hits me so hard my chest bends a bit. Few producers can manipulate time and space like this man...

I was supposed to hop on the tables after him but he was willing to go for almost a two hour set so I put 'em to work... word is he sometimes goes six hours straight on his Sunday stream on Subfm.com. Part two is on the way along with a playlist to be added later... in the meantime feel free to hit up Dub U on myspace in case we lag on that list (given the number of calls I got during the live set, the rundown is long overdue).

So its been long enough that I know I was fiendin for another Mochisession on my airwaves. This is the BirthdayPet show with Mike Boo on the turntable (the vestax midi turntable that he helped design by the way - first time in studio with it...) and Art Linkletterz on the mic. I kept part of our delightful post set mic break cause it was too ridiculous to cut off... although i didn't leave everything up there. But that way you can just listen to the end and find out about all the new albums coming out because I'm a little lazy with the writing and Mochipet is way too productive to keep up with...
He's been sending me these tour mashes of his vocals from the new Microphone Pet album due out later this spring that are making happy hour zombies dance like it's last call... I already know this is going to be one of my top albums of '08 and I haven't even heard Feel My China or Microphones & Muffins yet....
if you missed the live stream then you missed me playing the whole album before these guys got busy on the live set.
Some of these mashes are available for download on his myspace page too... and Do Geese See God is my shit right now!!
The Genie
This is the second time I've had The Genie in for a live session and it was way too long in between his visits. You really have to see what he does to fully appreciate the organic structure of each song and the elements he draws on with his performance... but pretty much the style is "scratch guitar" and his tools are his guitar, his mic for beat boxing and his pedals for looping and efx. I love it because it is a mode of turntablism taken over by a more traditionally concept of instrumentalism. The Genie uses beats and songs that we recognize to provide a reference point for the distance that he takes a slide guitar sound through efx and carefully constructed audio friction reminiscent of a dj scratching. Check videos on his myspace for a more in depth break down of the whole thing. He's working with some great producers right now so keep you ear to the ground on new albums soon to come... cause it's been too long...

Anyways... Rakim has a new label and sounds on the way and is still touring and doin what he can to keep hip hop a movement that we can still take pride in as listeners who choose to be inspired by our music. This was done at 2:30 am and we were all a bit done in but I appreciated the thought and consideration given to answering every question. I was surprised by some responses and I left with a better understanding of one of my favorite emcees of all time. So if this means something to you then I think you can guess what it meant to me. I'd like to thank Davey D of Hardknock Radio for contributing his questions to this segment as well. (This originally aired on November 3rd and may sound a little different cause I mixed it live in serato... somethin for you production geeks like me out there).
They keep it connected with with their roots in those classic Detroit sounds from funk to techno to everything Dillatastic mixed in with some Miami Bass and Chicago flavor while still bringing a new kind of musicianship to beat making and its wonderful machines.
I just gotta say that everything Paul Salva makes is an instant favorite and in this show you can hear me stop mid-sentence more than a few times as his sounds make my head stand still. Not only is he a skilled sound assembler but the man can rap and scratch and mix his ass off too... plus... he's now brought Approach out the the bay from Kansas to show the Bay Area emcees that they better step up the game cause these flows are tight. Approach also has projects comin out with Madlib fam Oh No and is constantly at work buildin that trueskool foundation up every which way he can. (Just check the two disks he's slingin at folks now... your ears won't let you let go of those sounds). The only thing missin on this show is emcee Epcot who's been lendin more than a lil helpin hand to the Glitch Mob as they slay crowds in the Bay and beyond.

The Perennial Philosophy changed up the tempo a bit when we had Hanni El Khatib (also a member of Her Space Holiday) doing a live acoustic set in studio and playing us some tracks off of his solo EP. Nick Andre (of Slept on Records and City Light) jumped in on xylophone for an impromtu version of Kelis' Millionaire that I had on repeat for days (and was making everyone I could listen... it's still up on The Perennial Philosophy myspace player as well). And may I say anyone that brings a xylophone in for a live set is automatically my hero! There's not much you can do with it that doesn't make something sound better. Nick also finally played us some of the City Light tracks that will be dropping on the album early 2008.
Taking the sounds that we all love in hip hop and bringing them together with all other sides of musical expression is what the show is all about and I'd be pressed to find two better folks to represent that. By bringing versatility to multiple instruments and gathering living music into their production, you feel the energy and soul that much more... plus Hanni drops sum mean "oooohs"... and you know how the girls love those "oooohs". So Check the links and enjoy the show. I threw the whole thing up unedited for that raw radio feel. Plus I wanted peeps to hear the live versioned remix of Pharoahe Monch's "Body Baby" at the end which I wasn't even allowed to keep a copy of.

I was thinkin it's high time for a lil more dubstep. I've been sittin on this set for a couple months 'cause Selector Dub U dropped some tracks from peoples he and I both like to support, and we wanted to be able to list all the wonderful talent going into this mix. Alas... the playlist is still coming but I thought I would go on and post this baby as the beginning of an onslaught of shows coming your way. I am up to my eyeballs in wonderful sets and enlightening interviews that I hope to work through over the next month so we can start the new year fresh!! fresh!! fresh!!
But enough about that... just to recap... Selector Dub U is a Bay Area pillar of dubstep and keeps me supplied with wonderful sets as often as schedules allow... Right now he also has a remix out on the Baron Zen album released a few months back on Stones Throw and will be sending projects out into the world in the near future so keep your eyes and ears open.
I also got to hear Emcee Child, who jumps on the mic with Selector Dub U from time to time, and was a little impressed. (And as this hip hop girl grows older and more jaded, mic handlers tend to do that less and less, I must confess). So check this dynamic duo live whenever possible and big up to the DJs making Dubstep live out loud in the Bay Area!
I've been very much aware of the sounds of Ghislain Poirier since he first releases began to trickle out on Chocolate Industries, but it hasn't been until recently that i have fully experienced that state of cerebral sonic immersion into his works which allowed me to appreciate the breadth of his references and the range of his rhythms. The interesting thing is that while he has been able to progress and grow as a producer, his music obviously belongs to him even through significant stylistic change. I hear a Poirier piece and know it's his.

This live dj set is a great example of his own tracks and his taste in general, ranging from the hauntingly bombastic to the bass heavy club friendly. Working with emcees as ecclectic and different as Omnikrom, TTC, The Bug, and Beans, he has proven himself as a subtle iconoclast and tastemaker as a producer and dj... I seem to always dig the artists that start out in radio the most (DJ Signify bein one of those radio bread self made minimalists as well...). I dare you map all the influences and elements finding their way into Poirier's production style. No Ground Under is an excellent example of extreme sound assimilation and transfiguration through beat building where the pieces are familiar but not directly linked to any one genre or sample base. Poirier is proud that his sonic manipulations render a instrument or sample into an unrecognizable version of itself. This album is going to be a standard other releases in 2008 are measured by. As Poirier begins to earn the title of a master of audio collage, his style brings together the varied textures of rhythmic parts from traditional Europe, Africa, Jamaica, and North America; and when I listen, I feel like I'm exploring a concept akin to a Klimpt where I can't tell exactly where the image is from and experience light and dark brought together into something that is ultimately beautiful... and in Poirier's case, good to bounce to...

Check live sets when you can... Poirier and crew are known for throwing sound systems into the streets of Montreal, and his live shows often are with drums, other instruments and emcees.
No Ground Under is out in Canada now and will be hittin the US in 2008 but Blazin is out now with sick b-side remixes from DJ C and The Bug so checkit...

This is a live set recorded on September 8th, 2007. Ghislain was a most gracious guest on The Perennial Philosophy and I must say he was one of the most mellow guest dj's I've ever had on. I might get around to posting the interview part later on as well but for now enjoy...

Ahhhh... this mix is something I have literally been waiting years for, and I can't say how happy it has made me. If you've ever asked me who I'm feelin' in hip hop at any given moment then undoubtedly my answer had included whatever I've gotten most recently from Ghost
. There are few producers who represent my taste so well and continue to surprise and impress me with every new track and collaboration. This man truly works hard for hip hop. "My Soul Looks Like This" is more than an appropriate title for me as the second track in (Kemuri) is the reason I became a dj and is still one of my favorite beats of all time. For Ghost, this just shows the range of his production style and gives you a taste of his tastes as well.
He's got plenty of new sounds makin' their way out to the world right now as his remix for the Soul Investigators just dropped. He has the new "It's All Love" 45 on its way and his second album is just about wrapped as well... so don't sleep, you can get a good taste on myspace if this set leaves you wantin more.
(Check Ghost's other groups Lingua Franca and Invisible Inc as well).
On August the 15th at Cafe Du Nord in SF, I recorded a farewell jam to the Rev. Mike Reed before he move along to NY and this is it y'all in all it's heavenly glory. The stage kept getting fuller and fuller as Spaceheater, Buddy Leroy, Gavin Root, and Khem joined Mochipet, Mike Boo, and of course... Mike Reed and his wonderful plaid plastered drums. So dig into sum Brochipet action... and see how we turn hip hop upside down in SF.

I gotta give another thank you to E Da Boss for making this introduction and for bringing Troublemaker through the show last June. The range of beats and styles that he brought to this set is enough to make your jaw drop... and when it does, pick it up because it's going to drop again. And not only did he come through with the mix skills but he dropped an album on me that's got heat too... I think New Math is definitely one of my favorite instrumental albums of the year. So if you like this, keep an ear to the ground for Troublemaker's live sets as he's fresh off opening for Timbaland and back in LA holdin it down. Links are below and this man is all over hype machine and getting blogged left and right for his remixes and production skills which he likes to share so hit em up and collect some beats really worth having.

Something that I am going to be doing in the coming months is doing regular features of some of my favorite visual artists. Chris Ballantyne did a wonderful installation recently at the Parklife store in SF. His use of colour, space and subject have a way of extracting objects and scenes from daily life in way that challenges the viewer to think about one's environment in a different context. I love his paintings because they remind me of the intricate ideas that go into planning our urban spaces as well as the dense fragility of the earth beneath our feet. In this interview we talk about his influences and process, and we get the unique opportunity of walking through the installation with the artist narrating for his own presentation.

"Our ideas of nature and landscape are written into city zoning codes with specific ratios of grass and trees, to pavement and concrete, fulfilling our need for a utopic balance of nature and culture. Backyard boundaries incite border disputes, bringing up arguments about trespassing and ownership that seemingly take as much importance as foreign conflicts. Empty pools, white houses, fences, windows and highway overpasses are among the subjects I often employ to explore complex relationships between people and our surroundings." ~ Chris Ballantyne

I think i have to preface this podcast by saying that before I had discovered the more east coast side of hip hop and the sounds of Primier and Pete Rock and Jeru and on and on and on... I stumbled onto the Jazzmatazz album and this discovery definitely was a pivotal point in my becoming more fully versed in hip hop and the culture behind it. Hearing the full cross section of ideas, voices, cultures and musical styles in this album was one of the many convincing aspects of the intellectual strength and importance of hip hop as vehicle of cultural communication and and social change. So... needless to say... getting the chance to record a live Jazzmatazz session complete with full band, Guru and his new production partner Solar (not to be confused with emcee francaise MC Solar) and then sit down with the two hip hop juggernauts for an hour after the show was an amazing experience. Please go see them live whenever you get the chance because the musicians backing these two emcees are well worth seeing and for me this is definitely one version of hip hop as it should be... versatile and spontaneous and communicative of intricate ideologies.
They get props from right here...

The recording is explicit and not the version aired. I kept a raw cut so you could get the full effect. This segment is the interview interlaced with segments of the live performance of Guru and Solar and the 7 Grand Band live at the Mezzanine in San Francisco on July 28th, 2007.

Almost a full year ago I was stuck in JFK for a 12 hour flight delay...thank god for a plug and wifi so I had more to entertain me than this couple doing tandem yoga (although that was pretty damn interesting too) and spent a good deal of time meandering around myspace... I stumbled onto Tycho's and Dusty Brown's pages and later met Tycho through a visual performance he did after a Matmos lecture... thanks to Kid Kameleon for facilitating that one... I finally got to catch the full audio visual set simultaneously with Wax Tailor earlier this summer and knew I really needed to get Tycho on the show. His work shows depth and meditions on light and shadows of sound and colour to an extent that it can be ultimately hypnotizing without being somnambulatory.

On August 3rd 2007, Tycho performed a live set on The Perennial Philosophy drawing on an audio palette as smooth as his color choice. The full live set is an audio visual but for radio purposes, this was just the sounds. To further your visual image he's playing along with seqenced samples and percussive elements on a synth and running that through a moog effects unit.

For a few months now, the first Friday of the month at Madrone Lounge in Sf has become a diggers paradise. The night is an extension of Dj Centipede's (aka Mophono) Change the Beat weekly on Tuesday nights and nothing but 45's are allowed. So far chunks of the best 45 collections in the Bay have been brought out as the likes of DJ Enki, Dj Centipede, DJ Om, Troublemaker, Joe Quixx and E Da Boss have been hittin the decks... and not only are cuts exquisite but the "cuts are exquisite"! cause these guys trick it out with a scratch here and a juggle there (which if you've ever tried to do with 7"s, then you KNOW what i'm sayin here).
The icing on the cake is that every month there a guest emcee... previously Raashan Ahmad of Crown City Rockers and Z Man of Heiro Imperium (and all over the Bay) have been holdin it down... this month Ryan Greene is on the mic... and speaking of this month... Spirit of 74 happens Friday August 3rd and then September 7th so come out if you can... this is the night where the DJ's come out their caves and the ladies get down. You might even catch Enki rappin over "short but funky" while dancing... thinks like that just don't happen every day.

So these three mixes are the laid back Sunday afternoon radio version of the night... Enki and E Da Boss alternate on a three hour set and I had to put it all up... the last hour is mostly 2 by 2's on the ones and twos... till Enki and I start talkin on the mic ( I'm posting the dry version without mic breaks because we were talkin hellish ish about ish... especially E Da Boss since he wouldn't come talk on the mic too... and since we exposed his secret identity on air, i've been in trouble

so kick back and enjoy... check the links... and holla at the boyz...

www.myspace.com/djedaboss
www.slepton.net
www.myspace.com/sleptonrecords
http://www.myspace.com/djenkimusic
www.enki.com
www.omhiphop.com

Every one that played at the anniversary party represented my favorite sounds from the spectrum I represent on the show... Salva and Epcot teamed up to bring us some bangin beats that are worthy of geekin out on as well. Not only are these two solid emcees that I am happy to have bless my radio mic anytime ( and Epcot is currently rockin heavily with the Glitch mob so check that for sure!) but they're dj skills give me a doubletake every once in awhile and then the beats they make are well... addictive... so this is part one of the Salva and Epcot side of the party... check the links! I'm going to have to bug them for a playlist since they threw a good bit of their originals into the mix and I want y'all to know where they are...

DJ Lady Fingaz came through once again and laid down a set that made me heart my hip hop all over again... whenever she does a mix set it's a combination of my all time favorites and a few hidden gems I might have stumbled accross. This is the live set kicking off the side room of the party we had for The Perennial Philosophy's 8 year Anniversary Party at 111 Minna gallery back in May.
Last August, Diplo brought Bonde Do Role through the studios and did a quick set and introduced the bay area to the sounds of Mad Decent Radio and the record Label. I'm pretty vocal about how much I like and respect the podcast and all the music that it presents along with commentary from artists included in Diplo's mixes. I've come by some great new sounds there and the label is like the distilled version bubblin up with some of my favorite cuts so far this year. There wasn't a single Sick and Loaded Party, I didn't drop the Mad Decent Ep and that's all Bonde Do Role. It seems like they're droppin new singles every few weeks so don't sleep. This is my crack music and I guess I was fiendin for a new Mad Decent podcast so I'm postin the recording of the August show. I dug it and dig it still... hope y'all do too...

Last September I sat down with Curumin backstage at the Mezzanine in SF before the Quannum Showcase of Curumin and the Aipines, Tommy Guerrero, and Honeycut. I was a little late on discovering Curumin's album; but since I stumbled accross it, Achados E Perdidos has been a staple of my collection. I could describe these exquisite sounds but I'm just going to let you hear them for yourselves. I love all the interviews I do but this one definitely stood out and every time I listen, I'm taken on a journey through Curumin's unique exploration of sound and relating it to his immediate and worldwide environment.
This year has brought a lot of great new artists, concepts, and genres into my sphere of sound. One of my favorite discoveries has been Maga Bo... word of his style and travels collecting sounds from Europe, Africa and his home regions of Brazil peaked my interest. I was graced with good timing in January and was able to meet up with him on a one day stopover in SF. He's constantly on the move connecting and collecting and has a lot of great projects with some amazing artists, known and unknown, coming out this year. The interview was done upstairs at Rickshaw on one of the coldest days of the year so you can hear our jackets rustling. You also get a taste of the sound check below giving an idea of what came later on in the evening.
This assembly starts out with a section from a mix that Bo did live on the Radio in Senegal. I also included 3akel feat. Bigg, Nakhil feat. K-Libre, and the intro section for the Confusion of Tongues mixtape. These tracks and the mixtape are all available on Soot Records http://www.sootrecords.com/ ...
Check http://magabo.com/ for playlist info and tour dates, downloads, and general news in the further adventures of Maga Bo.
Hope you enjoy ~ cikee

On October 30th of 2005 The Dollar Bin Quintet came through the show and did a live session. This was like a bay area super group for scratch DJ's with Mike Boo, Teeko, B-Cause and Max Kane all workin the tables and drummer J 1 layin down the live breaks. These five fellows are all masters of their craft and having them together in one room much less as a group doing a combination of jams and pre-arranged pieces was a truly special thing. Hearing the Dollar Bin Quintet is hearing a genre evolve into something new with each bar and seeing them is like nothin' else neither. The group has since dissolved although the members still play together in various capacities. Teeko has released "My Soundstation" and with this album has taken his craft to the next level. Max Kane and B-Cause are still throwin it down about town and makin mixtapes that always seem to get stuck in my player cause I want them to. And J 1 has moved back to the midwest but be sure and keep your ears peeled because he brings the funky beats and he brings em hard...
and of course Mike Boo is ever exploring the vast landscape of sound in solo projects and with Mochipet... he also dropped some cuts on the new ninja tune scion mix by Ronnie Darko so peep that too...
alrighty... lotsa info but this was one of my favorite shows with some of my favorite peoples...
